Maniac · $2/$5 live
The $2/$5 maniac who 3-bets light preflop is doing it with a much wider range than you expect - suited connectors, suited aces, any Broadway - not just premiums. But they also have premiums in there, so don't overcorrect.
Why they do it
$2/$5 maniacs are more strategically aware than $1/$2 maniacs. They know 3-betting light is correct in theory. They just apply it too liberally and too often. Their range is wide but not capped - which makes them harder to exploit than a pure bluffer.
The adjustment
4-bet or fold. Calling in position is okay with hands that play well postflop. Don't try to outplay them in a 3-bet pot out of position - that's where they're most comfortable and you'll spew.
What it's worth
Calling 3-bets out of position against a maniac with hands like KJo or QTo is a consistent money-loser. Folding or 4-betting correctly saves $40-80 per occurrence and keeps you out of ugly spots.
