The first-timer who's double-checking his cards every hand and asking the dealer questions is terrified of making a mistake. He'll fold to almost anything that puts him in an uncomfortable spot.

Why they do it

First-timers at $1/$2 are not trying to win money. They're trying not to embarrass themselves. Any bet that feels big relative to what they've seen so far will get a fold. They don't want confrontation - they want to survive the session.

The adjustment

Apply pressure early before they get comfortable. A slightly oversized c-bet takes it down almost every time. Once they settle in and relax a little the window closes - get them while they're nervous.

What it's worth

The first two hours with a nervous first-timer at the table are the most profitable. Don't sleep on it.
